New Look Here at

Was it just me or was the old site a little tired? In any case, I have updated the look and feel of our website – hopefully for the better!

What’s New?

So, what’s changed?

The most obvious things are probably the new headline / banner up top and the new social media links in the far right column. The width and position of the columns has changed as well as some of their content. What may be less obvious is the technical improvements. Least visible is the SEO friendly framework that should help others find our great content here. Other items include the ability to view a comment preview before you post and the addition of OpenID login capability.

Visual Updates

New Banner

The new headline banner up top was inspired by both our previous headline and that of the ISOC DC chapter. I included the new, official CO ISOC logo along with a great image of our beautiful state capitol building to spice it up a bit!

Social Links

I am particularly proud of the new social media links. The intention is to make participating easier by prominently displaying all the different ways you (and others) can get involved. I based these link buttons on the “hand drawned” social icon set by TheG-Force over on deviantART – Thanks G-Force, your icons rock! I added a little text, some css-foo and voila! Interactive social media buttons.

Here is an area that I really want your feedback. I slid the sidebars both onto the right side, changed their widths and mixed up the content a bit. Notice that what is displayed in each side bar changes a little based on the page you are viewing. So – are they easy to use? Do they contain the right info? What is missing? What should be added?

Technical Updates

So I am running the “Thesis” theme for WordPress here now. I have been using it on my personal blog for some time now as well as another site that I manage – all with good results. So when it came time to re-design, I figured I would try it out here as well. The primary motivation for this is to add the built in SEO (Search Engine Optimization) friendly framework that Thesis provides. It also makes it easy to switch things like column width and position, font types and sizes, basic colors, and lot’s of other stuff on the fly, from the gui.

The next area that I focused on is comments. The idea is for this website to be the focal point of CO ISOC’s online presence. A big part of that is community participation. Hence, making improvements to comments.

You can now see a preview of your comment as you type thanks to the Live Comment Preview plugin from bradt.

Another major improvement is that you can now log in to comment (or post) using OpenID now, thanks to the OpenID plugin from willnorris and factoryjoe. Why is this cool? Well, from the plugin’s page:

OpenID is an open standard that allows users to authenticate to websites without having to create a new password. This plugin allows users to login to their local WordPress account using an OpenID, as well as enabling commenters to leave authenticated comments with OpenID.

There you have it.

More Improvements?

Now it’s your turn!

Yep, this is the point where I ask for your help. This site is for CO ISOC members and the Internet community at large, in other words, it’s for you. So drop a comment below and let me know what I can do to make this site serve you better:

  • What do we need to add to the site?
  • What should be removed?
  • What aspects of the design need to change?
  • What design elements do you love?
  • What plugins / features should we take a look at adding?
  • What other feedback do you have?

Please do leave your comments, even if just to say: “I like it” or “I hate it.”
