IPv6 Transit and Peering
Back in November I spoke on the who, how, and why of IPv6 transit and peering at the gogoNET Live! 2 IPv6 event. To prepare for this I spoke with several of my IPv6 expert friends, did plenty of research and generally thought deeply about the state of IPv4 Peering and Transit practices and how we can do better with IPv6. The immediate result was this (roughly) 20 minute talk:
I really do see the deployment of IPv6 as an opportunity for all of us to kind of start over and get things right in this area and so I have since taken the info I gathered into these slides and built an IPv6 Peering and Transit BCOP outline which was introduced during the BCOP Track at NANOG 54 (where we also voted to ratify my BCOP on IPv6 Subnetting).
The high-level IPv6 Peering and Transit best practices that are called out in the outline BCOP are:
- Establish new, IPv6-only peering sessions
- Filter routes
- Filter Routes Coming from your Customers
- Filter Routes Coming from Peers & Upstreams
- Filter your own Routes
- Use an IRR
- Use IPAM
- Register in the PeeringDB
